Chapter 7
My knees wobbled a bit as I reached above my head to straighten one of the crystals on the chandelier. Being on a ladder was not my favorite activityâI hated heightsâbut the possibility that TDâs crew would lift this chandelier into place without fixing it drove me crazy. Under normal circumstances the contractor would have spotted the problem immediately, but he wasnât around today. Not that we talked much anymore. If I knew anything about contract labor, it was not to take anything for granted when the boss was away. As cautiously as I could, my shaking hands unwound the strings and the shard dangled free. I breathed a sigh of relief and prepared to ease back down to the safe ground.
âWhat are you doing?â The ladder shook under me. I froze and gasped for breath, as if that would steady me. âOh my God, I didnât mean to startle you. Here, let me hold the ladder.â It was Detra Ann, a bit early for our appointment.
I climbed down as quickly as I could with a nervous laugh. âYou move like a ninja! I didnât hear you come in, and normally every sound in this room echoes; itâs such a huge space.â
âIâm really sorry about that. I have on heels; I would have thought youâd heard me coming in.â She laughed, and I could tell she was nervous too.
âNo problem. I guess my concentration was focused on getting that crystal untangled. I didnât hear a thing.â
She looked around in awe of the room. âItâs looking amazing. I have to say that Iâm really impressed at how much you all have accomplished in just a few months. This is simply amazing.â
âThank you. We do make a pretty good team. Ashland has the brains, TD has the know-how, and I know the history. Itâs all worked out, thankfully.â She nodded in agreement.
âYou said you wanted to talk to me. Iâm hoping that means youâve changed your mind about having a ball here?â
âNothing is off the table, Detra Ann, but Iâm surprised that youâd still want to have a ball here after all the rumors youâve likely heard about ghosts. That hasnât put you off?â
âOh, come on now. In the world of marketing, having a ghost or two is only a plus. And you donât have to pretend with me; I know something happened here. Is anyone ever going to tell me what that was?â
I didnât know what to make of that. From what I had heard from Rachel, Detra Ann had told the interns about what TD saw that night, but maybe she didnât know everything. I had no idea. âNow whoâs pretending? Surely TD told you everything.â I couldnât explain it, but I suddenly felt the hair standing up on my arms. I looked around the room, thinking someone had joined us. There was no furniture to hide behind here in the ballroom, but no doors had opened either. If anyone was here, I couldnât see them. Detra Ann looked around suspiciously and then stared at me.
